.KEY MESSAGES...
1. A cooling trend will take place on Saturday with afternoon
highs lowering to slightly above normal levels. Daytime
temperatures are expected to show little change through the
holiday weekend.
2. Increased wind gusts are possible later this afternoon and
early this evening over the Mojave Desert Slopes with up to a
65 percent chance for gusts greater than 40 miles per hour.
3. Freezing temperatures may return early next week, with
Tuesday and Wednesday seeing a 35 to 60 percent chance for low
temperatures of 32 degrees or lower, mainly in the rural areas
of the San Joaquin Valley.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Cool and dry northerly flow prevailing over
central CA today as the area remains situated in between a rex
block off the CA coast between 130W and 135W and a deepening
upper trough over the central CONUS. The northerly flow will
bring a brief period of increased winds to the Mojave Desert
slopes through this evening with the PoE of winds exceeding 40
mph at 65 percent early this evening. The northerly flow pattern
will also provide for a slight cooling trend to take place on
Saturday with afternoon highs on Saturday expected to be 2 to 4
DEG F cooler than today. Little change in daytime temperatures
are anticipated over the remainder of the holiday weekend as the
upper pattern remains quasi-stationary with the rex block near
130W and the deep trough over the central CONUS.
Medium range ensemble means are in good overall agreement with
the rex block shifting eastward with the high pressure center
positioned off the Norcal coast on Tuesday and Wednesday. This
will in turn result in a dry offshore flow pattern over central
CA wit h a dry airmass prevailing over our area with daytime
temperatures rising some while nighttime temperatures lower
which would result in an increased potential for sub-freezing
temperatures in the San Joaquin Valley next Tuesday and
Wednesday mornings. The PoE of minimum temperatures of 32 DEG F
or lower in the rural areas of the San Joaquin Valley is between
35 and 60 percent both mornings.
Ensembles are showing signs of a pattern change taking place
late next week with a trough dropping into central CA during the
weekend of January 25 and 26 which would provide for increased
precipitation chances for our area during that time frame.
&&
.AVIATION...06Z Update:
Areas of MVFR visibility in mist in the San Joaquin Valley from 12Z
Sat thru 18Z Sat. Otherwise, VFR conditions will prevail across the
area for the next 24 hours.
&&
